Chapter 6

Sal was tight as a drumhead.

After all that we'd had happen leading up to this... This was awkward. I made myself answer, after a few deep, steaming breaths.

"I don't hate you," I said, which was true though it surprised me to say it. "But I am pretty angry with you."

"Don't bullshit me, Scott!" Sal shouted, his hands tightening into fists. The tension went all the way up his midsection, making his muscles tighten out.

Slick with sweat and completely bare they really did stand out. I guess changing shape makes you cut weight - I felt like I was lighter, too.

"I've been chasing you for fucking years, man," Sal said, sucking in a breath.

"I was always behind. I was always kept out from catching up. You think it'd be easy to catch up with a guy who's on the road and nine times out of ten you know exactly where he's going, right?"

I stared straight at Sal now, because at this point I was way past surprise. I'd thought he was trying to gay-bash me. Maybe destroy my business. Maybe it was some old feud of Cab's.

Now it sounded like... he hadn't been kidding. He really was a fan. Or something more than a fan.

"But the business always kept me behind. Now I find out, years later, you've settled down, but you didn't... You don't fucking know how things are done!"

Sal swept a hand over his forehead, sweeping back sweat. "And since you didn't get raised up properly, you're thinking -- You're thinking I'm just fucking with your livelihood!!"

I looked up then, and this time - this time I caught his eyes.

His face startled when I did the trick. It's hard to describe but I think I'd figured it out.

You've probably done something like it - you glare at someone and you want them to see you. Parents do something like it, but for people like... Like me, now, I suppose... There's more to it.

It was like shouting hey! in my mind.

Out into his mind.

"Stop that," I said. And I was a lot more mild than I thought I'd be, even if I'd already been thinking I would talk him down.

My heart was pounding again.

I kept talking. "I'm mad at you because you didn't come talk to me like a normal person. You did me some damage here, Sal."

"Heh! Like a normal person," Sal scoffed.

"If you're going to talk like you're in some kind of club where the rules don't apply to you," I said, taking a step towards him, "you ought to stop screwing around and be honest with me!"

Sal stiffened. His eyes came back to mine.

"You kept dropping hints because I guess you... You don't want to say you're a werewolf, or whatever, in the middle of Costco," I said, faltering just a little because it was kind of a pretty big whopper of a thing to say, "and that's alright, I can understand that, but we're not out there now, are we?"

Sal breathed in sharply. I could hear it clearly.
